They are indexed privately for your firm, hosted for you, and are not used to train anyone's model. The documents stay in the storage you already use and are read from there.
Can the assistant be wrong?
It can, which is why every answer quotes the document and the passage it came from. It is a way of finding what your firm has already written, not a substitute for reading the file.
Does it give legal advice to the people who write in?
No. The chat agent handles practical first contact and appointments. Anything about the substance of a matter is passed to a lawyer, and the document assistant is internal: it answers your own people, not clients.
